our story

born out of defiance

Founded in 2013 by John Owen and Carl Meier, Black Abbey was born from a desire to defy the corporate mold and redefine American craft beer. Inspired by European brewing traditions, they set out to create something different—something timeless.

In an industry flooded with trends and gimmicks, Black Abbey chose another path. By embracing traditional styles, time-honored brewing methods, and an uncompromising dedication to their brand, they’ve built a portfolio of beers that are unmistakably Black Abbey—bold, balanced, and rooted in history.

conviction to quality

When Martin Luther had enough of the corruption and spectacle of the Catholic church, he didn’t just complain. He wrote a formal dispute, went to the church, and nailed the damn thing to the door. And others followed him.

At Black Abbey, we say cheers to that. It’s our inspiration for a process that’s 600 years in the making. It’s the reason we bestow our handcrafted beers on all who’ve been exalted by the revelation. Above all else, it’s our calling. These are beers born out of defiance, brewed with conviction, and quaffed by fellow devotees.

respecting traditions

Medieval records indicate that brewing was a purely female endeavor. Martin Luther’s wife, Katharine Von Bora, brewed beer at their homestead, financing his ministry! Drawing inspiration from this history, Alisha carries the legacy of women in brewing forward with passion and precision.

Alisha elevates The Black Abbey’s catalog of beers, pushing boundaries and redefining expectation while remaining committed to classic styles and
time-honored traditions. With every pour, Alisha transformed beer from a simple beverage into an unforgettable experience.
